--- title: European Portuguese text matching description: Accent and plural matching, retained product terms and brand-query limitations for Portuguese catalogs. slug: discovery/portuguese-text-matching docKind: reference hub: luigisbox-ai --- Portuguese text matching is tuned for European Portuguese. Noun and adjective plurals match their singular forms even when a query omits accents: `fogoes` matches `fogão`, `portateis` matches `portátil`, and `lencois` matches `lençol`. Pre-1990 and Brazilian spellings also match their current European forms: `eléctrico` matches `elétrico`, `detector` matches `detetor`, and `umidificador` matches `humidificador`. The elided `d'` is removed, so `água` matches `caixa d'água`. Product terms remain searchable, including `sem` in `aspirador sem fios`, `só` in `só frio`, `no` in `No Frost`, `se` in `iPhone SE`, `pelos` for pet hair, `eu` in `ficha EU`, and the energy classes `a` and `e`. Common function words such as `de`, `que` and `têm` are ignored. NAS storage, NOS routers, ME/TE codes, JA Solar panels, ERA locks, DOS/OS names, COM ports, units such as `um`, and `São`/`Sao` in names remain searchable. `não`/`nao` (not/non) and `fora` (outside) retain their product meaning. `black & decker`, `black decker` and `BLACK+DECKER` match each other, including when all query terms are required. Any other `&` is treated as `e`, which remains searchable for the energy class, and `+` as `plus`. When all query terms are required, `bang & olufsen` therefore matches `Bang & Olufsen` but doesn't match `Bang Olufsen` or `BANG+OLUFSEN`; `bang olufsen` matches all three. A catalog owns the language; channels over it share the same text matching. See [Catalogs and channels](/concepts/catalogs-and-channels/#language-belongs-to-the-catalog).
